How the #1 was picked
Every candidate faced the same questions, and every answer was written out rather than scored.
First, remove the casino
Each candidate faced one blunt test: with its gaming floor locked forever, does the place still justify a long-haul flight? A surprising number of candidates fell away immediately, because without the casino they offered little more than a large block of rooms beside a highway.
The questions we asked
| Question | A convincing answer |
|---|---|
| Does arrival feel special? | A first impression that sets the stay apart, before the key card is even handed over. |
| Are the shared spaces worth exploring? | Lobbies, gardens or halls with art, design or nature that reward a slow walk. |
| Is the room a good place to wake up? | Natural light, comfort, quiet and a view that adds something to the morning. |
| Can a whole day pass without gambling? | Spa, pool, restaurants and things to see that keep guests content on site. |
| Is the destination easy to explore? | Airports, ferries, rail or short rides that open up the wider region. |
Why we do not score
A figure like 9.4 out of 10 implies a precision that hotel judgement cannot honestly offer. We prefer to make the argument in words and to say clearly which travellers should look elsewhere, so you can test our reasoning against your own plans.
Why payment is refused
No hotel, operator, agency or tourism body can buy a place on this site. The single outbound link points to the official hotel site with no tracking tag, and there is no reservation widget earning a fee.
Fresh looks at the decision
Every twelve months the verdict is reopened, or sooner if the resort announces major works, a change of owner or a closure. The date shown on the home page records the latest review.
